Rangehood ducting kits are supplied as convenient packs that provide all you need to vent your rangehood to the outside. 100mm, 125mm and 150 mm packs are available for wall, soffit and roof venting.
The packs contain everything you need except perhaps, duct tape. The roof kit doesn’t include the weatherproofing ‘boot’, which varies according to the type of roof on your home.
At the bottom end, these will use flexible ducting, which is best avoided. Top of the range will include a muffler (silencer) to reduce noise.
There is an extensive selection of ducting products available to extend and modify your ducting installation.
Beware of Cheap Ducting
The cheap flexible foil ducting used by many tradesmen is to be avoided at all costs unless you want extra noise in your kitchen. The best solution for avoiding excessive noise is solid ducting or failing that, semi-rigid aluminium ducting. For a few dollars extra a muffler kit will give best results.
IMPORTANT WARNING
Remember that domestic ducting has to comply with building codes, which stipulate that ducting that penetrates the walls and ceilings must me made of fire resistant material. This means that the plastic hose that's supplied with many of the cheaper rangehoods does not comply. This is an important consideration that ignoring could have expensive repercussions. An operating rangehood is liable to suck up the flames of a stove-top fire into the rangehood and up through the ducting. Plastic hose will burn fiercely and can set fire to the house framing with catastrophic results. Your insurance policy will not pay up if your building does not comply with the building code in such a way that leads to a claim.
A good quality ducting pack will ensure that your home is effectively ventilated, code compliant and as quiet as possible.
